Wine Preservation
If you're like me, you frequently have leftover wine and am under pressure to finish it as quickly as possible before it turns to vinegar. There are many ways to preserve wine and many tools on the market that
claim to do just that. Which works, and what's a complete waste of
money? The last thing you want to do is save the unfinished portion of an amazing bottle, only to discover that it's turned to vinegar a few days later!
These are the different methods used to preserve an opened bottle of wine:
- Using vacuum to remove air from the bottle
- Spraying inert gas (argon, nitrogen) to replace the air in the bottle
- Simply re-corking
- Storing the wine in the refrigerator
- Pouring leftover wine into smaller, air-tight container
Most tools on the market will attempt to preserve wine using either method 1, 2 or 5.
By testing each of the most common and practical ways of preserving an open bottle of wine, I discovered that storing your leftover wine in a smaller glass container with an air-tight screwcap was the best method, followed by spraying inert gas into the wine bottle, like the Private Preserve. Others swear by the vacuum pump (I disagree) so you may want to do your own experiment and decide for yourself!
